Former North Peace Navigators captain Austin Kuhn has some good memories from his time with the team.

The product of Slave Lake says the late Darcy Haugan played a big role in bringing him to the organization.

“In my last year of midget hockey, we had been playing in the AA league here in Slave Lake and we always played against the Peace River Royals. He had come out and watched some games and he went out of his way to really get a hold of me, I learned a lot about what they had there in Peace River and what the program was all about and the organization and what they strive for.”

Kuhn played with the Navs from 2014 to 2016 and was part of that 2016 Navs team that won the Junior B Provincials.

He then played Junior A hockey for the English River Miners of the SIJHL in Northwestern Ontario, then went to Adrian College and Division 3 school in Michigan

Kuhn says he’s still involved with the game and this past season started coaching minor hockey in his hometown of Slave Lake.

“I coached some U18 aged kids, it was another eye opening thing. It was a different aspect of looking at the game because you’re used to listening to somebody else tell you how to play the game. Now it was completely reversed and I was trying to spread my knowledge of what I have of the game to these kids and try to get across to them what I might see.”

He also has a connection to the current Navs team, his younger brother Aaron is the current team captain.
