The Alberta government is working with Northwestern Polytechnic to offer physician training in the region.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says this will help create more access to doctor training programs.

“If we can create more access opportunities in different communities, we can help recruit more individuals to study these various programs and then ultimately stay in their respective communities. The real critical part of this is fundamentally about access, opening up the doors to more training opportunities for physicians and other heal occupations and professions.”

Nicolaides says they want to get more training opportunities for aspiring doctors in rural areas.

“If we’re able to deliver training opportunities in more cities, more rural and remote communities in particular, we can increase the number of individuals from those communities who are ultimately trained as health care professionals as doctors and others and then subsequently stay in their respective communities, stay in their region and practice at their skill levels serving their community members.”

The province is spending $1 million to explore ways that regional post-secondary schools can help deliver medical education outside of Edmonton and Calgary.
