PRSD To Conduct its Red Lights Flashing No Passing Campaign Next Week

The Peace River School Division (PRSD) is conducting its “Red Lights Flashing No Passing” campaign next week.

Transportation Coordinator Crystal Gordey says it will be taking place on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.

“Free coffee will be served from 7:30 until 9 AM at a variety of different places,” Gordey told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “They include Nampa Fas-Gas, Tim Horton’s and McDonald’s in Peace River, Grimshaw Mac’s, Fairview’s Husky Station, as well as the North Town Esso and Subway Restaurant in Manning.”

As well, the Dixonville General Store will also be taking part in this activity, but their event will go from 9 AM until 12 Noon.

Members of the Peace Regional Traffic Safety Committee will be on hand in each location for discussions regarding school bus safety. The coffees will be courtesy of the MD of Peace, as well as the Towns of Peace River and Grimshaw.

Gordey says the division wants to raise awareness among motorist that passing a school bus while its lights are flashing is illegal, but it’s still going on.

“We sometimes have up to 50 fly-bys every school year,” she said. “And it’s pretty surprising, with the importance of the students getting off the bus and how dangerous it is for them to be getting off the bus. It’s definitely a good promotional awareness to let each community know, and to be aware about this ongoing issue.”

Anyone caught doing a fly-by around a school bus could face a maximum fine of $543, as well as six demerit points.

The rules apply whether or not you care behind the bus, or coming towards it. You cannot move your vehicle until the lights are off, the stop sign is in and the school bus begins to move.
