June 8 2023 – Please be advised that the Town has received an update with regard to a new wildfire, High Level Wildfire 058. This fire is currently out of control far to the South of the Town. The reason you are receiving this update is because that new fire is now threatening the power line South of us. There are 4 primary feeds for power into Northwest Alberta and three are already compromised. This currently threatened line would be the fourth. While the fire is still approximately 3km away from the power line, as the fire activity increases for the day, the potential exists for this powerline to be compromised. There are helicopter crews currently working to protect this infrastructure, but we wanted to make everyone aware that we may lose power as early as today. As there is no way to estimate the potential damage that may occur today there is no forecast on when repairs may be available. For the other feeds into the area, the estimated repair is June 16th.
The Town did not release the generator we had been using for our water treatment plant, so there will be no loss of our water or natural gas utilities.
