The provincial government has some big goals as part of their tourism strategy.

Tourism and Sport Minister Joseph Schow says while tourism spending has gone up over pre-pandemic levels, he feels that there’s “more that we can do”.

“There are some missing pieces which is really attracting more international visitors into Alberta. So the tourism strategy boils down to things like developing new products, making sure that we have good collaboration between the government and private enterprises and also developing different regions with our 10 tourism development zones.”

Schow says rural Alberta is a focus of their strategy where they believe there is some “untapped opportunity there” and that they will have a huge role to play.

“Working with our tourism operators in place in the Peace Country to help them develop new exciting products that are locally developed, locally managed and tell a local story. These are the kinds of products that I’ve heard from travelers coming from across Canada and even from around the world in places like Europe, they want to hear it.”
