The new MLA for Lesser Slave Lake has been very busy already in the job.

Scott Sinclair says one of his early priorities was on getting support for local communities that were affected by the wildfires earlier this year.

“One of them is a one time payment to the Metis Settlement of East Prairie and helping them rebuild. The more pressing one would be the provinces wildfire relief efforts in terms of even farmers, we have some programs in place to be able to help them, on top of any regular evacuees that were evacuated away from their communities, we did have quite a bit of relief payments there.”

Sinclair says he’s hoping to be involved in a committee for preparing for the next wildfire season.

He’s also the province’s Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous Policing, where he says he’ll be working with some indigenous communities that are interested in creating their own policing services.

“We’re not force feeding any of this, we’re listening to communities that are saying whether it be the logistics of how far away they are from RCMP or just what they feel like maybe is a lack of resources in their community, we’re going to try supplementing in and filling in the gaps for them. What I’m really proud of is we’re going to work with each community individually.”

As part of the role, Sinclair says he will be reporting directly to Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis on the matter.
