The Pleasantview Lodge in Spirit River will be undergoing an expansion, possibly next year.

Central Peace-Notley MLA, Todd Loewen was at the lodge on Friday to make the announcement.

“Today we are bringing the good news that Spirit River will be home to 52 new continuing care spaces and 40 lodge spaces as part of the new Pleasantview Lodge project.”

Loewen says the province is investing $24 million into the expansion.

This is the second long-term care facility in the Peace Region to receive help from the province.

In February, the government announced $7.3 million to help expand the Del Air Lodge in Manning.

Loewen says allowing seniors to be able to remain in their town, closer to family, is a priority of the UCP Government.

“Having our seniors age in their own communities was a priority and it’s great to have an announcement like this to help fulfill that,” says Loewen.

The Grande Spirit Foundation operates the lodge, and General Manager, Steve Madden says it is too soon to say what will happen with what will soon be the former lodge’s main building.

“The total building size will be 92 units, just down the street from here,” points out Madden.

“This unit, being a bit older, needs to go to the community’s hands to figure out what they would like to do with it.”

Madden could not say with any certainty when construction is expected to begin.

“It would be great to start next year, if at all possible,” suggests Madden.

“There is a long road ahead between the paperwork and putting all drawings and designs together.”
