Young Job Seekers in Alberta Continue to Struggle

The province’s youth continue their struggle to find employment.

atb-logoATB Financial says that among the 15- to 24-year-old age group, the province’s unemployment rate is currently at 13.5 percent, which is higher than Alberta’s general unemployment rate at 8.8 percent, and about even with the national youth jobless rate of 13.3 percent.

Current numbers also show that since September 2013, unemployment among Alberta’s youth has steadily climbed from about seven percent. In August 2016, the rate was at almost 15 percent.

Analysts say that with many companies forced to reduce their payrolls due to the recession, it’s looking like the struggles will continue.

Even with the economy showing signs of recovery, the bank says employers may be slow to hire back too many staff. And even if they do, they’ll likely pick the applicants with more experience.
